A Few Favorite Spots - July 2024
As the month of July draws to a close, Ive decided to do some “reflective journalism” if you will. This month has been many things, but ill just list the top three; hot, humid, and hectic. In these trying times its important we take the time to find some good food and libations to keep up general moral. Id like to share a couple of my favorite eateries I went to this month in July.
Sfera - (Sicilian)
Located in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, Sfera is offering some top tear Sicilian street food. As soon as you walk in you’re greeted with the most pleasant staff and lovely décor, beautiful bright whites, yellows, blues and oranges amongst others. The quaint shop serves your classic Sicilian favorites like Arancini, Sandwiches, or Pane Cunzatu, Pizza and more, also offering a fabulous selection of desserts. Their cannolis or cupcakes pair perfectly with a fresh cappuccino or latte made with their top class Lavazza espresso. They also have a small retail section of curated items like bags of their espresso, Italian sodas, pasta, oils and much more. I love grabbing a quick lunch from Sfera, always fresh and scratches that Sicilian comfort food itch we all seek time to time.

Jibaritos y Más - (Puerto Rican)
Jibarito’s y Más is a vibrant gem that brings the heart of Puerto Rican cuisine to life in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. The cozy atmosphere, music and warm, welcoming service enhance the dining experience, making it a standout spot for anyone craving genuine Puerto Rican flavors. Amongst other things, they are most known for cooking up authentic jibaritos, showcasing perfectly seasoned, crispy plantains as a delectable alternative to traditional bread. The flavorful fillings, from tender, well-spiced pork to succulent chicken, are complemented by fresh toppings and savory sauces that elevate each bite. If you’ve had too many jibaritos lately (how is that possible?) and need a change of pace, they also offer a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads and various entrees . They also offer a range of fantastic appetizers such as meat pies, banana dumplings, carne frita, sorullos, and much more. If you’re thirsty try some Puerto Rican sodas, fresh juices, or imported beer. Such a great place to get a quick bite, take some friends/ family, or even try a new cuisine you may haven’t ever experienced.

Brother’s Creamery (Frozen Treats)
A small but charming spot, situated in the Lake View neighborhood of Chicago, Brother’s Creamery is quickly becoming one of my go to destinations for great custard and other frozen treats made fresh, daily. I have only been one time, but my go to item is the Belgium Butter Pecan Concrete, (think of a blizzard from Dairy Queen). It has fresh Vanilla frozen custard blended with Biscoff cookie spread, bananas, roasted buttered pecans & topped with butterscotch drizzle, garnished with pecans, a waffle cone piece and fresh mint… nice touch. A rich, and deliciously bold sweet treat that is perfect for any occasion.
